Northeast, DC resident Lavaughn Barnes was arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed following an investigation into the grisly discovery earlier this month.

Officials say that shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, members of the department were called to a home in the 1300 block of Kearney Street in Northeast, DC, when a homeowner reportedly found the human remains in a backyard while landscaping.

Upon arrival, the officers found the remains, which were confirmed to be human by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The investigation into the remains determined that the victim’s death was the result of a homicide, and Barnes was arrested for his role in the alleged murder less than two weeks later.

Police noted that the victim’s identity is being withheld pending a positive identification and next of kin notification.

Barnes is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Thursday, Feb. 16.
